This is a scan drawing I did a few months back and I just haven't done anything with it ever since so when I saw it again this morning, I scanned it and started to color it. I started the process today around 8am... but since I skipped breakfast, I'm feeling a little fatigue already and I can't seem to come up with any new ideas. So I'll resume this tomorrow!

Summer Swimming Suit! - Work-in-Progress 2

First off, I want to apologize for no updates in what seems like forever!  My mother has been really sick and the emotional level in the family is at its all time high.  So afters weeks, of what seems like months, she is finally feeling better and I could finally have the heart to continue my process.  

Well, little process.  Here are just the color schemes I was playing with and have finally chosen.

Reminisces

This was a short animation I did in my Digital Narrative course at UW-Stout.  I went with a traditional style of drawing frame by frame animation but on a Wacom tablet!!!  So I guess, it's not really traditional drawing?.. but the concept of frame by frame is there!

Project THREE: Pop-Culture Art

I based my pop-culture art on the Coca-Cola ads. I targeted the Hmong audience in general. This concept was based in on the Hmong in the late 80's and early 90's when the Hmong were highly exposed to the American culture of Pepsi and Coke products. For me as a child in those time, I remember vividly of the dad and uncles popping open a can and acting cool about it. And it was a big thing for us back then. Now, Pepsi and Coke products have just become another everyday life and no one acts "cool" when holding one like they did back then. But with that said, here is my tribute to those times set in the style of today's pop art!

ProjectTWO - Through His Eyes: Confession of an Alcoholic

Through His Eyes: Confession of an Alcoholic - Daddy's Key Rack

Here are some idea sketches of what I will be doing. I've decided to use the objects of a risk watch and keys on a key ring. I will be using caps from bottle beer glass as ornaments to be decorate both the risk watch and the key ring.

Why is this a psychological message or meaning? Here, you have to put yourself in the shoes of an alcoholic, even your mind set. When all you can think about is beer, even the littlest things like a watch will remind you to have another can or glass of beer. And that is my concept for this project.

I want to put not only myself but the audience into the shows of an alcoholic. This project will invoke the concept of what goes through the mind of an alcoholic while maintaining the integrity of ornament based project.

ProjectTWO - Ideation Cont.

I'm back from Spring Break!!! Back to the old school work =( and what not! Anyways, sorry for not posting anything new for a while (even when I said I would). Remember that it was SPRING BREAK so I did needed time to relax too! But, that is now over and it's back to work on this project.

Last time I posted, I mention that for project 2, I wanted to combine both the concept of what I would go with on ornament as well as a psychological message or meaning. So this past week, I've read some articles of alcoholics and how alcohol has effective them dramatically to the point of where their lives has fallen apart, but in most cases, most of the articles are the same about regret, despair and depression. I don't drink so I really can't put myself in their shoes 100% but it was this thinking that created the backbone of my project.

I wanted a abstract way of showing how things look in another person's eyes while still maintaining the concept of ornament. Here I could manipulate the objects, in an ornament fashion, so the object would invoke the psychological thinking.

ProjectTWO - Research Cont. / Ideations Phase

Research CONT. and some Ideation (During my Spring Break!!!)

Okay, so this really is a continuation of my research because I did do some research on ornaments already in my previous blog posts. And also, yes, I'm doing this during my spring break. Why? Because Amy told us so... and she's right. I really do need to start thinking about my ideas for project two. I mean, I have down what concept I think Ornaments are and how I am approaching this project, but I lack the idea of where to start or what to do. So, I thought long and hard and this blog post is recording my thoughts.

So last time I mention last of how ornament changes the psychological reasoning or message of a piece when it is added. That's also what I want to capture in my piece for project 2. A piece of work that combines both what I have mentioned how I'm using ornament in this project and a psychological message. So to make this bluntly short, I wanted to do a project based on alcoholism. Not because I'm an alcoholic but because alcohol is one of the top 5 causes of deaths here in the United States. So this week, I'll be reading more on alcohol to see what ideas I can generate from them. I'll have another post soon so please keep following my blog!

Some of my Ornament Examples

Hello again everyone! Today, I wanted to share some ornaments I found as well as a short description of why I think they work as an ornament




















The top one is a necklace. I choose this one because of it's decorative flowers on it. I also believe that necklaces are the simplest forms of ornaments. The next two are picture frames. I believe they too are simple forms of ornaments. You see, my thought at ornament is you take one object, (in this case lets say the necklace), and you add other, (the flower), and you get what?... the same necklace but more decorative. This is also true in furniture and architects even when ornaments were first introduced and it is also the main concept or idea I will follow in my project for Project 2 for Drawing III class. Also, going off this, I wanted to add that I also truly believe that ornaments are things that are, in most cases, unnecessarily. For example, the picture frames could just simply be a plain picture frame, but when ornaments are added, it still is the picture frame but the psychological reasoning or thinking behind it changes.

Ornament

What is an ornament? Is it basically patterns? Well from Wikipedia, a ornament is as followed:

"Ornaments are decorations added to a building or structure, made of plaster, wood, metal and stone"

Well, now that we are in the 21st century, ornament in contemporary art has taken a whole new turn. However, I believe that the basic principles or purpose of ornaments are still the same. I think of ornaments as patterns or any other decorated objects or items placed upon another object to appease the looks. Of course, also now that we are in the 21st century, I believe ornament pieces could evoke a physiological meaning as well. That's what I think Ornament is... what about you guys?

"Beyond the Clouds"

Here is my final touch on my project. As you can see, I added more organic to the front to give that sense that this miracle will survive. It's also ironic that I decided to leave the grass and tree in black forms when they are the representing probably the only living thing left on this planet. That is because I wanted to show that this is somewhat like a "secret" miracle, but more so that this was in a place hidden from the elements that will destroy it. I also thought a lot of adding human figures but swayed away from it. Let me know what you all think. This project took me over two weeks to finish. (Including research, etc.)

Artist notes
The project again was Science and Art. So I took science from both ends of the spectrum, technology and nature, and came up with the theme of "Nature versus Technology." I wanted to show what would happen if one just so happens to over take the other. However, I really didn't want to make this look similar to those that have already try to attempt this theme. In my work, I wanted to theme to be calm and quite, not aggressive as if both sides are at each other's throat intentionally.

The way I set the scene up is to puts the audiences into the pieces as if you yourself was hiding in the shade peering out into the ruined land. This gives you a sense of wandering and adventure as you're trying to look past the grubs and tree into the landscape. First, you see the plant that are trying to survive. When you look past that, you see the tortured land and how bad they are by the colors and textures. Just over the beaten up land, you see the source of the reason why this land or planet is in bad shape, the smoke stacks and factory like buildings. Then, beyond the clouds, the only thing there is the sun trying to peak through the popluted sky but then you notice that everything in the sky is pretty much just blended together. Setting up the scene as it is, you relaize that you are in the prespective of the plant trying to get energy from beyond the clouds.

ProjectONE Process

Project 1 for Drawing III process.

Hey guys! Just in-case anyone is carious of what I'm doing so far, here's my progress. So I decided to go with the "industrial" idea. I believe this theme has a lot of value in it that everyone could take away from. On the left there, is my refined drawing of the idea I had last time. I did some outlining for some of the edges on some objects. A technique used by interior designers that I researched. I also added atmospheric perspective that will accompany well with the dark grass in front. (As you can see in the right picture) Everything is darker in front and fades out into the back.

-the string attached on a can telephone from the guy in the painting
-the string extends to the outside, (physically), world
-there is a guy in the canvas

-you can pick up your end of the phone to talk to the guy

Ideation ONE

Industry Idea

My next step after the research phase was to put those information I found to use! I started with some random sketches of mountain terrains that I wanted to do for an "industrial" like environment. My thought behind this was like a huge industrial like company that has pretty much turn this land to its red and brown colors. However, at the outskirt of this polluted environment exist some form of greens. But, as you can see... I didn't get that far yet with the drawing.

Struggles
Some struggles I've encountered already is the use of color. To be very honest, color is not my strongest point. So, here you have me working with prespective, which I'm new to, and also colors, which I really suck at! This project already, is starting to proof a challenge for me. However, at the same time, I feel that afterwords I will benefit a lot from this project as well. Bring on the CHALLENGE!

Nature Versus Technology

Oooo, sorry I didn't have time to update all of you guys about my first project here in Drawing III. Been a little busy with everything that I just didn't find the time to scan all my sketches out, but here they are finally.

Okay, about my project, it's going to be based around the theme or concept of nature versus technology, (like I stated before in the previous entry). I wanted to show how, as technology increase and spread out into our daily life, how that may affect the environment. It's really an unconscious thing because we really don't think about it very often and it just happens. So I wanted to do a drawing that has the effects of technology infused in nature. However, me being highly influenced by comics and movies, I wanted to do something really fantasy based. So from that thought, I decided to do something that I haven't done before, and that is environment concepts. (On to the RESEARCH!!!)

Environment concept, if you haven't guessed it already, is a concept that shows the bigger picture and idea of what an environment would look like. This is heavily used in any production big or small. Some of you may even have seen some of these concepts floating on the internet with video game and movie production. So why is this a big deal for me? Well, environment concepts are highly perspective based and that, to be quite honest, it's really more of an interior designers strong point. I'm actually a multimedia, working with animation or 3d. So this is really new to me and I'm really doing tons of research on perspectives! On the sides here, you can see me poking around with point perspective.

Another thought I wanted to clearify is, I'm drawing these in my sketch book first then I'm turning them in as digital and refining them in there. I will have one final drawing done for Project based on what I have worte here on my blog. (I guess I works like my process book in a way too =p)

Science Question

What happens when nature and technology mix? Will they co-exist together in one fused unit or environment? Or will one destroy or over take the other?

My question relates to what happens when you get science from one end of the spectrum, in this case nature, and you mix that with new science from the other end of the spectrum, or the fast growing technology. What happens when technology becomes so great that it expand out of the comfort of our homes and into nature? Whether the expansion of technology is for a good cause or not, will the two combine? Will living organism be able to co-exist with non-living technology? Or will we be able to see a fusion of the two, for example, technology that is made out to look or mimic trees. In a different sense, just what happens when human expands into nature? Just how the look or feel would it be like if we starts building houses with nature.

I want to draw digital concepts relating to this theme and topic. It would be like a series of concepts like I would made it for a movie or game production. Creating the environments or characters with the theme of nature and technology fused. Right now, I'm looking heavily on the works of Feng Zhu, a great concept artist who started as a interior design background.

Thursday's group - Response

At Thursday’s class, we discussed about what “drawing” is. What drawing was in the past and what it is now. Most of the groups came up with similar answers and reasoning. In the past, drawing was a part of life. Whether it was for recording events or religious reasoning, early human use drawing as a way of survival. Today, it is more about self-expression and this is true in just art in general. I, myself, believe that we don’t really appreciate it as much as our early ancestors did because nowadays, there is so much more different ways and method going about recording or what not.

We also discussed what method drawing should or are used for. One of those was drawing as a purpose of learning. Why do masters of art succeed? They sketched out their ideas first before painting the final product. It makes complete sense that if you draw a lot, you learn from your drawing and get a better understanding from it.

However, I think that drawing or what we think drawing is, is based on the realm of our own personal level. What you consider drawing to be is different from what others consider drawing. You may think one way is cool and others may say it’s cliché. But think about it for a minute… we are in Drawing III! It’s supposed to be a class where anyone can do a research topic on whatever it is he or she wants to learn about. So I don’t know why we can’t do a certain research just because one or two student think the topic is “cliché.” For example, if you say flowers are “cliché” but a student, who really wants to learn more about flowers, really want to do research drawing flowers, why can’t that student do so? We can’t just sit down and say this is what everyone should do and not do. We can’t decide for everyone just because people speak their opinions on some questions. That takes away the whole purpose of why everybody is in the class in the first place. The reason why everyone is here is to research and projects based on whatever they want to learn, even if that subject is flowers. To be honest, I think the discussion brought out more confusion and frustration. I like the first half of it when we just talked about our opinions of what we think drawing was, but I really didn’t like how we have to ingrate that into the semester goals and pretty much turn it into limitations for our individual projects. (if that’s where it’s leading to)

Found Drawing: Follow-up

So this week we had a taste at what "found" drawing was and even had our chance to come up with our own definitions. I guess in the end, to me, found drawing can still be anything that you or anybody find that represent art in some shape or form, whether or not it is intended to be art or not. However I do feel that the resources found online my not be legit as those you would find yourself.

From Life Drawing II to Drawing III

It's been a while since I've posted anything new. I must admit, I was enjoying myself this past holiday season and that was the main reason for not posting. Anyways, I'm back and it's a new year! Happy New years to one and all! Most of my new posts now will be works from my Drawing III course here at UW-Stout.
